H. Clinton: Violated federal records retention laws (?)

H. Clinton

Hillary Clinton may have violated federal records retention laws by using a personal email account for all messages she received or sent while at the State Department, the New York Times reported .

The newspaper wrote that the potential Democratic in the next presidential election conducted all of her official electronic communications during her four-year tenure at the State Department through a personal email account.

The publication adds that Clinton, who served as US secretary of state from 2009 to 2013, recently turned over more than 55,000 pages of emails to the State Department as part of the department's effort to implement record-keeping practices.

Federal law states that letters and emails sent or received by federal officials are government records that must be preserved, according to the newspaper.

Regulations at the time Clinton was Secretary of State also required the retention of emails from personal accounts, the same source reports.

The newspaper notes that experts believe that personal email accounts should be used for official government transactions only in cases of emergency.

A Clinton spokesperson told the newspaper that the former secretary of state complies with the "letter and spirit of the regulations" and that she expected her emails to be preserved, without however clarifying why she chose to use her personal account.
