Malware: 5 signs your PC is infected

malwareDo you think there is malware on your computer? Have you ever had the feeling that something is wrong with your system? If you suspect something like this and after a scan with the antivirus you use you discover nothing and you stay quiet, you may be making a terrible mistake.

Everyone relies on various antivirus programs to stay safe online. But what if there's a new malware that your security software database doesn't recognize?

It's a well-known cat-and-mouse game between security companies that offer antivirus solutions and malware developers. Virus developers try to create a new variant or a whole program that is not registered by security companies, and antivirus manufacturers rush to keep their virus databases up to date.

The problem is that there is always a time gap between when a new variant is developed and when it is discovered and included in antivirus databases.

During this time gap, many people end up infected. Since some malware disables antivirus software, once malware infects a system, the security software you are using is probably unreliable.

Below we describe 5 symptoms of Malware infection:

1. Simple tasks seem to take forever

Are you trying to open a window and waiting longer than usual? It could be a sign that something sneaky is lurking on your system and using up your computer's CPU and other resources.

Check the processes running on your computer to see if there are any suspicious programs using all your memory resources, bandwidth, or CPU. If you discover any suspicious processes, Google will tell you if there is any known malware using that process name.

2. Your browser takes you somewhere else

A sign that shows you that there is malware on your computer. Your browser is acting strangely and taking you to different search engines, which you have never used. Rootkit malware is notorious for taking over your browser. When it infects your browser, it starts redirecting you everywhere and is very difficult to remove.

Along with an up-to-date antivirus, use the Sandboxie application. It will add a personal Sandbox to your browser. Read more: Sandboxie your free personal Sandbox

3. Your hard drive sounds like it's constantly working very loudly

If you hear your hard drive "suffering" even when you're not doing anything, it's a sign of infection. It could be in need of maintenance like disk defragmentation, but it could also be a sign that your system has been compromised and is being used as a slave by a botnet.

4. Your router or drive lights show activity even when no one is using your computer

If your computer has been compromised and is part of a botnet, it begins receiving commands from the malware's command and control center. Botnets can cause your computer to launch a DDoS attack and other malicious actions that require your internet connection and massive computing power.

Your computer can be used to attack other computers while you sleep, even while you're working on it. You may not even realize it when you see the network activity light flashing and you're doing nothing.

Note: This is not always an indication of a breach, as if you have allowed automatic installation of updates, you may see the above signs at odd times.

5. The Antivirus you are using does not seem to be responding

As mentioned above, the malware that hit your computer may have disabled your antivirus software. Check to see if your program is still active and if you can get updates. If not, it could be a sign that your computer has been compromised.

Use a malware scanner for a second opinion. If your primary antivirus software has been disabled, it's a good idea to have a second line of defense.
