A new study conducted on a small sample shows that using tablets and electronic reading devices (e-readers) in bed at night destroys sleep.
Researchers at Pennsylvania State University in the USA organized an experiment in which 12 people took part. In the first phase of the experiment, these people used various electronic devices in bed before going to sleep, such as mobile phones, laptops, tablets, e-readers, etc. In the second phase, the volunteers read a book. The researchers found that the sleep of these people was problematic when they had previously used electronic devices. The researchers found that the problem is maximized when someone uses tablets and e-readers before going to sleep, especially those that produce blue light.
The use of these electronic devices kept the volunteers awake longer than when they read a book. Also, the quality of sleep after using these devices was worse compared to the quality of sleep when they are not used. The use of these electronic devices disrupts the mechanism and patterns of sleep. It causes disruption in important phases of sleep such as those that produce dreams.
The result is that the person who has used tablets and e-readers in bed at night does not sleep properly, the body and especially the brain do not rest as they should. So the next morning they have difficulty waking up and feel that they do not have the necessary energy to continue their day. According to the researchers, the artificial light emitted by these devices is responsible for these problems, which disrupts the circadian rhythm that controls the body's biological clock. The study is published in the journal "PNAS".
