A 28-year-old Georgia man, a former member of ShadowCrew, was sentenced last week to 115 months in federal prison for buying stolen credit card data and user personal information from a forum. He was also fined $40.8 million.
Cameron Harrison pleaded guilty in court last April to participating in an underground forum that was linked to cybercrime, drug trafficking and money laundering.
Kilobit is a member of ShadowCrew.
Under the alias “Kilobit,” Harrison traded on the forum, but was caught buying a stolen driver’s license from an undercover cybercrime agent posing as a user of the site. He also admitted to being part of the ShadowCrew, a group of hackers who were involved in illegal Internet activities between 2002 and 2004.
The illegal forum, Carder.su, was shut down in 2012, following action by the U.S. Secret Service. 55 users were expelled, with 26 having been arrested and convicted and the rest being fugitives or still awaiting trial.
At the time of his arrest, Harrison had over 260 stolen credit cards and, according to the case file, was living off them. The sentence imposed on him is completely fair and sets an example for other cybercriminals who cause not only financial problems for their victims, but also psychological ones.
