Hackers used stolen vendor passwords to break into the credit card of the home goods chain Home Depot.
After two months of investigations by the company itself, the police and hundreds of security workers, it was revealed that the damage was greater than initially estimated as hackers " got their hands" on 53 million e-mails and compromised 56 million credit cards.
The hackers managed to remain hidden for quite some time as they made sure to "move" within the company during business days and hours, designing a malicious system that initially collected information, then transmitted it to an external system and finally erased its traces.
It took five months to uncover the hackers' actions in the largest attack on a chain store's credit card system to date.
