The head of YouTube reiterates that she is seriously considering the possibility of allowing access to its rich content without ads, in exchange for a subscription. "There has to be a choice," Wojcicki stressed, however, in her interview she does not reveal the subscription model that YouTube will use.
Earlier, YouTube's management was faced with the possibility of a mass departure of artists from its service after associations of independent record labels and artists accused "mother" Google of blackmailing by blocking those from YouTube who do not sign more unfavorable royalty payment terms compared to artists from the three major record labels.
The possibility of YouTube operating as a subscription-based service without ads has been heard before, however, the implementation of the model is considered unique since the content on YouTube comes from creators seeking to emerge from obscurity or professional vloggers attempting to gain something from the views of ads on their videos. Of particular interest will be the part of the subscription that Google reserves for content creators, especially after the negative comments it receives about the small portion it gives them from advertising revenue ($2 per 1,000 views).
However, Google has attempted to provide other tools to the creators it hosts, such as Fan Funding, which allows fans to make donations from $1. Currently, Fan Funding is limited to creators from the US, Mexico, Australia and Japan. Finally, in September 2014, it began producing programs in YouTube Spaces in Los Angeles, Tokyo, London and New York, fully equipped studios.
