Kickstarter removed a crowdfunding project for a popular Tor-based router program on Friday afternoon .
The Anonabox, created by August Germar, was intended to be an open-source, network-attached device specifically designed to run Tor. The funding goal was $7,500, and in five days, it reached $585,549 from nearly 9,000 backers—including three ArsTechnica editors.
Germar stated that he was unaware that his project had been canceled until one of the above editors informed him, via an email (received from Kickstarter), describing the possible reasons for the cancellation.
In recent days, many commenters on Kickstarter have pointed out notable errors in the project, including the fact that Germar claimed to have created the hardware himself, while other commenters have spotted links to websites featuring nearly identical devices.
