BERLIN-APOSTLE. The Galaxy Note Edge stole the spotlight at Samsung's Unpacked Event held a few hours ago at the Tempodrom concert center, here in Berlin. The reason is that this particular smartphone, which is essentially a variant of the Galaxy Note 4 that the company also revealed in the German capital, features a screen with a curved edge, which "hugs" the right side of the device.
This extra section can display notifications, the time, messages from social networks or control buttons for the camera and video playback. In addition, Samsung announced that it will provide developers with the appropriate tools so that they can take advantage of it in any application.
The rest of the technical characteristics of the Galaxy Note Edge are identical to those of the Galaxy Note 4, Samsung's new proposal in the phablet category. Thus, both phones incorporate the quad-core Snapdragon 805 processor and 3GB of RAM, which means that they have "brutal" performance. Belonging to the Note series, they are naturally accompanied by an electronic pen, for which Samsung has provided several improvements in its operation, making it even easier to use.
At the same time, both devices feature a 16 Megapixel main camera, with an advanced optical stabilization system, which promises quality photos and videos. However, the front camera has also been improved, which has a resolution of 3.7 Megapixels, while the phones are equipped with a multitude of biometric sensors.
At the same event, Samsung also showed off the Gear VR, a virtual reality headset that is exclusively compatible with the Note 4. So, by wearing the Gear VR and connecting it to this phablet, the user sees a 360-degree panoramic image of content that is played back with the help of the mobile phone. The “suit” was built in collaboration with Oculus, the manufacturer of the similar gadget Oculus Rift, which was acquired by Facebook.
The presentation also included the new Gear S smartwatch, which was announced a few days earlier. The smartwatch has a curved screen to "hug" the wrist, while it is the first to connect to 3G and Wi-Fi networks, so that it can operate completely independently of the "smart" phone.
Therefore, the Gear S owner can stay informed about notifications from social networks, calendar or their apps, even if they don't have their phone with them. They can also receive incoming messages or reply to SMS using the watch's virtual keyboard or the S Voice function, for as many languages as it supports.
