A new virus has been circulating on the internet in recent months and, according to the announcement issued by the Cybercrime Prosecution, it is spreading through various horror videos.
The virus appeared on 10/05/2014 and all users who have tried to watch the videos to date have had their computers "infected" with malware.
As reported by the Prosecution, once this malicious software is installed, it acquires the ability to perform various illegal actions, without the user's knowledge, such as disabling system security settings and more specifically the firewall, so as to open backdoors for other infected programs.
It also interferes with the browser and the performance of the computer itself, changing the home page and the default search engine (of the browser). At the same time, unwanted advertising banners, pages with subscription messaging services and malicious files for download begin to appear. Finally, there is the possibility of intercepting passwords and other malicious actions (such as sending spam emails, etc.)
It is noted that posts appear in Facebook's news feed that appear to be "videos" with strange - shocking content, urging users to click on the post in order to watch the "video".
The malicious posts appear with various titles such as: Vin Diesel Has Died While Filming a Deadly Scene From Fast and Furious 7, You Won't Believe What This Pregnant Girl Does, [SCHOCK] Schlimmster Motorrad Unfall Der Welt (Shock! The worst motorcycle accident in the world), Girl Killed herself live On Cam Just After Dad Seen Her While Doing This on cam!, with the following titles being the most common:
"Video" of a ghost attack (Alleged footage of an "actual" ghost attack).
"Video" of mermaids (a video of Mermaids claiming they are back!).
"Video" of a huge great white shark tearing apart a sea captain.
When a user clicks on these posts, they are usually first asked to share the post on their “wall” in order to unlock the “video” (thus participating in the spread of the malicious posts). A message then appears stating that they must download or upgrade their browser’s video player in order to be able to view the “video.” If the user takes this action, the corresponding malicious file is installed, according to what parapolitika.gr writes.
