BlackBerry is buying private German company Secusmart, which specializes in voice and data encryption, in an effort to improve credential security as part of its strategy to target specific industries and niche segments.
Secusmart specializes in encryption and anti-tampering services for the public sector, businesses and telecommunications services.
The acquisition is the latest by the smartphone pioneer to create specialized divisions as it seeks to reinvent itself under new CEO John Chen and regain ground against the iPhone and Galaxy devices. Chen wants to remain competitive in the smartphone category, but is focused on building strong BlackBerry to bolster security and enterprise app offerings.
