A 19-year-old American student is accusing Instagram of racism after the social media platform removed a photo of her in her bra and shorts. The photo is reminiscent of those posted on social media by models and shapely girls, with the only difference being that Sam Newman is a bit overweight. The 19-year-old accuses the popular social network of removing her photo because of her weight.
The controversial photo of the young woman with the caption "My belly," as Business Insider notes, simply shows a bare belly, nothing different, that is, from images one encounters in gyms and beaches, but also from thousands of other selfies that are uploaded daily to Instagram and all other social media.
A day after posting this photo, on July 13, Instagram disabled her account without warning. The 19-year-old reported the incident to the Huffington Post and local channels including NBC4i, ABC6, FOX28 and 10TV. The media supported her, and Instagram released a statement through NBC4i claiming it had made a mistake.
He also sent the same statement to Business Insider: "When our team processes reports from other members of the Instagram community, mistakes occasionally occur. In these cases, where we have accidentally removed content, we are working to correct the error as soon as possible. We apologize for the inconvenience.".
