Arbor Networks reports that the first half of 2014 saw the most volumetric DDoS attacks ever

Arbor Networks

  • During the first half of 2014, more than 100 attacks exceeding 100GB/sec were carried out
  • Attacks over 20GB/secin the first half of 2014 compared to the whole of 2013
  • Reflection attacks on the Network Time Protocol ( NTP ) were responsible for about 50% of attacks above 100GB/sec .

Arbor Networks Inc., a leading provider of DDoS and persistent threat protection solutions for enterprise and service provider networks, today announced global DDoS attack data compiled from the company’s ATLAS® threat monitoring system. The data shows an exceptionally high volume of threats in the first half of 2014, with more than 100 attacks exceeding 100GB/sec recorded.

ATLAS is a collaboration between 300 service provider customers, who share anonymized traffic data with Arbor, in order to provide a comprehensive picture of global traffic and online threats. ATLAS collects statistics corresponding to 90TB/sec of Internet traffic and provides data for the Digital Attack Map. The latter is a map of all attacks on global traffic and was created in collaboration with Google Ideas.

Key findings of ATLAS during the first half of 2014:

  • The first half of 2014 saw the most volumetric DDoS attacks ever, with more than 100 reports of attacks exceeding 100GB/sec so far
  • In the middle of 2014, attacks exceeding 20GB/sec doubled compared to the whole of 2013
  • The largest attack recorded in the second quarter was 154.69GB/sec, down 101% compared to the first quarter of 2014. More specifically, this was a reflection attack on the NTP protocol that occurred in Spain.
  • Reflection attacks on NTP protocols are still significant, but their size and scope have decreased compared to the first quarter of 2014. The average NTP traffic volume is decreasing worldwide, but has not yet returned to the levels of November 2013 (before NTP attacks began to multiply)
  • The second quarter of 2014 saw fewer large attacks – with the average size of these decreasing by 47% compared to the first quarter of 2014

“Following the storm of NTP reflection attacks in the first quarter, volumetric DDoS threats continued to be a problem in the second quarter, with more than 100 reports of attacks greater than 100GB/sec to date. We have also already seen more than double the number of attacks greater than 20GB/sec compared to last year,” said Darren Anstee, Director of Solutions Architects at Arbor Networks. “The frequency of very large attacks continues to be a problem, and organizations should adopt a comprehensive, multi-layered approach to protection. Even those with increased Internet connectivity volumes can find that they can be addressed relatively easily.”.
