The international research summer school, organized for the second consecutive year by the Software & Knowledge Engineering Laboratory of the Institute of Informatics & Communications, at NCSR Demokritos, began with a competition to create new and useful applications for smartphones, focused on the field of agriculture and food.
The Hackathon, which was based on the data and content of the Semagrow Project and was sponsored by the company Agroknow, was attended by all 34 students of the summer school, forming seven teams. Each created its own application within a few hours.
Everyone's goal was to come up with a proposal that would help either agricultural researchers identify the sources they need, or those responsible for food safety education programs to prepare their campaigns.
The winning team was Franziska Kersten, Euphrosyne Mavroudi and Nikolaos Zoulis, who presented the Farm Learning application - a proposal for the creation of a knowledge network, aiming to save old useful experience and identify, on the part of agricultural researchers, new sources of information.
The jury consisted of the ardent supporter of the start-ups sector, Dutch Ambassador to Greece Jan Versteeg, the founder of Farmers Republic Dimitris Koutsolioutsos, NCSR researcher Demokritos Antonis Koukourikos and the CEO of Agroknow, Yiannis Stoitsis. The cash prize for the winners was 500 euros.
The summer school will continue its work until July 30, during which students will attend lectures by Greek and foreign professors and will implement a total of 13 projects, all at the cutting edge of technology, which they will put into a competitive process on the last day, to highlight the best.
