Security researchers are warning of a new scam on Facebookthat exploits the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines, which has been in the media for a long time.
The scam relies on the gullibility of potential victims, stating that the missing Boeing was eventually located by a sailor.
The misleading posts contain links that promise users access to a video of the aircraft's location.
Hoax-Slayer reports that the image accompanying the posts is actually from a US Airways plane that crashed into the Hudson River in 2009.
This type of fraud aims to get potential victims to complete various survey questionnaires, with financial benefit for the fraudsters.
The scammers report that the sailor who found the aircraft received the sum of $5,000,000 in order to attract more victims.
"The scammers who create these fake video posts earn money through shady affiliate programs every time a user participates in a survey. And, they trick users into sharing the posts, significantly increasing the number of potential victims," reports Hoax-Slayer.
