Requests for telephone surveillance are increasing at a rapid pace each year, as indicated by the report of the Authority for the Protection of Communication Privacy.
According to the report, in 2013 the ADAE received 4,141 prosecutorial orders that concerned new cases of lifting communication confidentiality for national security reasons, a number almost double compared to 2012. Also, within the past year there were more requests for extensions of earlier communication confidentiality lifting orders, which amounted to 5,006 instead of 3,193 in 2012. At the same time, of course, the Authority received 729 orders for the suspension of confidentiality lifting versus 599 in 2012.
According to the same report, frequently, privacy removal requests are submitted by the Hellenic Police, the Anti-Terrorist unit, and the Special Anti-Corruption Unit.
