Chicago will house the museum of all things George Lucas and Star Wars.
A widely reported statement from Lucas says that it is sad for the director that the museum will not be located in his native California. Both San Francisco and Los Angeles were considered to host the museum, but Chicago is simply a better location. The Chicago Tribune reports that the city receives nearly triple the number of tourists as San Francisco.
The new institute will be called “The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art” and will feature a collection of Star Wars and other items from Lucas’s collection. The Tribune reports that director Norman Rockwell’s private collection includes paintings, many objects depicting the story of storytelling, gadgets developed for special effects and more.
As the museum's name suggests, the exhibits are expected to be about storytelling, rather than focusing solely on Star Wars.
Chicago authorities still need to sign off on the design and use of the site, but local media reports that the city's mayor has confirmed that the museum in the Windy City is on track. Opening day is expected to take place in 2018.
