The United Kingdom has become the second country after the United States to launch its famous “Google Glasses.” The Internet giant has turned to the UK to attract developers who will use the technology of its much-discussed glasses that create the feeling that information appears to be projected ona 25-inch (63.5 cm) diagonal screen floating 2.4 meters in front of their right eye. Google Glass is available at a “prohibitive” price of 1,000 pounds (approximately 1,251 euros), and this is because it is said that their cost could be much lower if Google had no reason to limit their dissemination and use for the time being.
The biggest obstacle facing the American giant is the current ban on the use of screens while driving to avoid distracting the driver, with the exception of displaying navigation information. Discussions with the relevant transport ministry are ongoing, the BBC reports.
Despite the ban, Google is showcasing the use of Google Glass by a cyclist, although it is limited to information about their performance and relative position.
However, Google is clearly inviting not the general consumer public, but developers who will utilize its technology in new ways, to participate in the beta (test version) of Google Glass.
In the relevant presentation, Google suggests using Google Glass for listening to music (“ok glass, listen to”), for following a fitness program (it suggests the LynxFit and Strava Run applications), “hands-free” communication for sending SMS or Google Hangouts, cycling (with the Strava Cycle application), golf (Swingbyte, GolfSight), navigating the streets during walks or cycling. Google also suggests taking videos, noting that the battery limits the duration of the recording to 45 minutes. It also demonstrates some special capabilities of its Glasses, such as the ability to recognize printed text and translate in real time (e.g. signs on foreign roads), the ability to search for cooking recipes through the AllTheCooks application, taking voice “notes” in Evernote (“Ok glass, take a note with Evernote”), making calls and sending SMS with voice commands.
