Google announced the creation of a domain registration service called Google Domains , through a post on its social network, Google+.
"As we explore ways to help small businesses succeed online, through tools like Google My Business, we thought it made sense to take a closer look at the starting point of every business' online presence - the website. And that starts with the domain name," it says.
Google has announced that it is starting to invite a small number of people to the launch of Google Domains. Businesses will be able to search, find, buy and transfer the best domain for their business – “whether it’s .com, .biz, .org or any of the wide range of new domains available on the web.”.
Although Google Domains is not yet fully functional, the company announced that it is giving a limited number of users the ability to purchase and transfer domains through it and provide feedback on their experience. It also notes that it has partnered with some of the top website building providers, including Shopify, Squarespace, Weebly, and Wix.com.
As noted in a BBC report, Google is making this move as GoDaddy (one of the largest companies in the space) begins the process of raising $100 million through a share sale. “This puts them in direct competition with GoDaddy,” said Keith Timimi, president of VML Qais, a digital marketing services company - adding that this way Google will be able to better promote its other services, such as AdWords, to businesses looking to strengthen their online presence.
