After six months of preparation, the University of New South Wales has opened a cybersecurity research centre in Canberra and says it is designed to bring together academia, government, defence and business expertise.
So, instead of having students be malicious hackers, they are trying to focus on computer security by giving them a network connection to ACCS (Australian Centre for Cyber Security) to practice cyber attacks – and this will take place outside the designated training area.
The University's announcement says the center "combines knowledge from a range of communities: politics, cyber industry, defense, academia, and media."
The ACCS Research “specialty” is set to include “ computer and network security, risk management, international politics and ethics, law, and big analytics for security.” In other words: how to hack, how to prevent attacks, what you can hack, and how to detect a hacking attack.
The centre is located on the Canberra campus of the Australian Defence Academy.
