Imagine being able to scan an apple at the grocery store and instantly see what it's made of, how many calories it has, and how sweet it is. A team of scientists has moved from fantasy to reality.
SCiO is a small, pocket-sized molecular sensor patented by Consumer Physics Inc., a startup based outside Tel Aviv, Israel. By placing the sensor near an object and pressing a button for two seconds, SCiO can instantly analyze the chemical composition of the object and send information via the cloud to the user's smartphone, which then displays the desired information on the screen.
While the company has a working prototype of the SCiO, the final product has yet to be built. The device's developers have launched a campaign to raise $200,000 for the project. More than 11,000 people have pledged their support, bringing SCiO's total funding to nearly $2.5 million.
Backers will receive SCiO when it becomes available in December 2014.
