Google has upgraded its popular VirusTotal analysis tool with the addition of a malware uploader for Mac OS, in an effort to better understand the growing attacks against the Cupertino operating system.
VirusTotal suspicious URL and file samples for malware using 52 anti-malware products. These samples are sent by Google to anti-virus companies that fail to detect the threats.
VirusTotal now allows Mac OS X 10.8 and Mac OS X 10.9 users to upload suspicious files to it to be checked for viruses and malware.
Google's Karl Hiramoto said the popular analysis and security tool, which the company acquired in September 2012, will lead to enhanced security for Mac OS X.
“Hopefully, this new feature will lead to more Mac apps being downloaded for analysis, delving deeper into an increasingly targeted operating system, and allowing anti-virus companies and researchers using the VirusTotal backend to build stronger defenses against these threats,” Hiramoto said.
