They listened, saw, learned, “were enchanted” by the story that “carries” and decided to capture not on paper but in a board and electronic game, their love for the marble sculpture of the Victory of Samothrace, which
it can be exhibited at the Louvre Museum, gathering tremendous interest, yet it does not cease to be part of the “heart” of their hometown.
Twelve male and female students of the A’ and B’ Gymnasium, of the 3rd Gymnasium of Alexandroupoli, aged 12 to 14 years, created, within the framework of the Cultural Program “Victory Goes to School”, an electronic and a board game, the “Saokis Victory Game” for the Victory of Samothrace.
“Within the framework of the Local History lesson, the idea ‘was born’ in me and in Ms. Anastasopoulou, who taught it, to create a game to make the Local History lesson more attractive and experiential. Due to lack of time (the lesson is one hour), our idea was transferred in the afternoon for the Cultural Program ‘Victory Goes to School'” explained to APE-MPE the coordinator educator Stamatia Charitou.
With the idea of coming into the spotlight, the children's working group began implementing the project in November 2013 and completed the effort in early May 2014.
Enthusiasm, creativity, imagination and perseverance were the “ingredients” that produced a result that justifies the children: the game, in its board game form, is a fabric board, with four clay pieces, each of which is a statue of Victory and includes four categories of cards, with questions on artistic, historical, archaeological and general interest topics (ceramics, fabric painting, computer knowledge).
The electronic game, an application installed on a computer, also has four categories of questions and a timer for submitting an answer. In case the answer is correct, it is accompanied by green coloring and applause of approval, while if it is incorrect, the color changes and becomes red.
The game for Niki of Samothrace (and in both its forms) was presented within the framework of the program “Niki goes to School” and the students of the schools of Evros gave a warm welcome to its creators. “They described the game as original, creative, different” said Ms. Charitoudi.
Both the children and the teachers who participated in the creation of the project feel proud. Beyond the initial recognition the game achieved, through its presentation, now the creative team discusses, according to Ms. Charitoudi, the possibility of promoting the product in the domestic market (in both its forms).
Indeed, it is not excluded that in the future there may be contacts with entities, aiming to promote actions that could contribute to achieving the aforementioned goal.
In the effort to create the game, teachers who supervised, joined and voluntarily helped the team are Ms. Zisidou and Mr. Kitos. Valuable external collaborators are also Ms. Delaki (member of the parents and guardians association of Alexandroupoli Gymnasium), Ms. Kostidou (pottery maker) and Ms. Gkeveze (responsible for the electronic game) and a former student of the gymnasium.
As for the children who “traveled” in the history of their place, the experience was unique, since during the creation of the game “everything was very happy and we also, all of us, got to know, loved and appreciated this treasure of our place, the island of Samothrace and Victory” emphasized Ms. Charitou.
