A total of five people have been arrested by Chinese authorities, accused of carrying out distributed denial-of-service (DDOS) attacks against the systems of a major Chinese online gaming, based in Shanghai.
These attacks targeted the login page of a popular online game and prevented subscribers from accessing their accounts. The attacks resulted in financial losses of 10 million yuan ($1,600,000 / €1,160,000).
According to police, the first suspect, surnamed Wu, was arrested in January after the gaming company provided authorities with key information that led to his arrest.
Wu told investigators that he had been hired by a competitor of the targeted company, specifically an internet company.
This company not only offered online gaming services, but also hacking services. The founder of this company hired people who would hack into the systems of various organizations and then use the hacked computers to carry out DDOS attacks against various targets.
The company's founder was arrested, as were three other people who appear to be involved in the cyberattacks.
