Amazon's answer to Apple TV
Amazon today introduced its own offering in the video streaming device segment. The Amazon Fire TV is a $99 set-top box, available today in the US market, that can stream content (such as music, games or movies) to your TV.
This is a very small and particularly slim proposal, which does not pose any problems with its placement in your living room.
In terms of specs, the Fire TV integrates a quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM, and Amazon claims that its offering is three times faster than the corresponding offerings from Roku and Apple.
It supports voice commands, while offering access, in addition to Amazon Prime Instant, through applications to many "rival" content services, such as Hulu, Netflix, Youtube, Vimeo, etc.
The Amazon Fire TV has an Android-based operating system, with a custom UI, as the American company is accustomed to. It comes with a remote control that connects to the device via Bluetooth.
Among other things, the Amazon Fire TV also emphasizes gaming capabilities, through "thousands" of gaming apps that are available, while, as stated by Amazon through partnerships, they will also develop their own games. In addition, a gamepad will be available for the Amazon Fire TV at a price of $ 39.90 that includes 1,000 Amazon coins (the company's digital currency) for the purchase of games.
The Amazon Fire TV is available today only in the United States at a price of $99, with no information yet on its international availability.
