Medical examination with Google Glass

Google Glass

A hospital in Boston, United States, is going beyond the ordinary and incorporating Google Glass into its equipment, equipping doctors on duty in emergency rooms.

More specifically, in the Emergency Department of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a prototype information and communication system based on Google Glass has been developed.

The doctor wearing Google Glass can look at the bulletin board, where QR codes (Quick Response code) are posted.

Google Glass automatically identifies the patient's room to which it should be directed, while at the same time information about the patient's history is sent from the hospital control center directly to Google Glass.

The doctor can then examine his patient, as he would in any case, with the difference that he will be able to access critical data, such as the results of the patient's laboratory tests.

The patient examination system in combination with Google Glass has been used for the past three months by Beth Israel Hospital. In fact, for the needs of the program, certain measures have been taken to fully integrate Glass and its applications into the hospital's control system.

For example, all Google data was deleted from the device to ensure that no personal patient data would be passed to Google servers.

The devices also received some fixes and modifications from hospital staff. For example, an external battery pack was added, the wireless signal transmission power was increased, the ability to pair with iPhones used by the hospital was added, and wireless signal and battery indicators were added.

An interesting aspect of the program is the patients' own reaction to doctors with Google Glass. The less suspicious are wary.

On the contrary, those who are more familiar with the technology have more questions about how the system works. For their part, doctors found the function useful since it helped them to immediately respond to critical patient cases.

A total of four doctors and ten other hospital employees participated in the program. According to the website Ars Technica, the Beth Israel Hospital administration will proceed to officially publish the results of the system test within the next two weeks.
