A report by Newsweek magazine, according to which the creator of the online currency, Bitcoin, has been identified, has caused confusion in the international press.
Until recently, it was believed that the name “Satoshi Nakamoto,” attributed to the unknown creator of Bitcoin, was the pseudonym of a group of programmers who developed the entire system. However, according to Newsweek, the creator is 64-year-old Dorian S. Nakamoto, a Los Angeles resident, physicist and model train collector – who, however, in an interview with the Associated Press denied any involvement, claiming that he did not know about the currency until his son, who had been contacted by a journalist, informed him.
As reported in the Newsweek article, Nakamoto was identified through a search of public records for American citizens with that name. This was followed by further research for individuals with the education and background that would allow them to create the now-famous digital currency.
According to Leah Goodman, the journalist who reported on the story, Nakamoto had the right profile, while additional evidence emerged when she spoke to members of his family, such as his strong interest in privacy issues and his political views.
It is noted that according to Goodman's report (whose investigation lasted two months), Nakamoto, when he spoke with her face to face, with two police officers as witnesses, stated that "I am no longer involved (in Bitcoin) and I cannot discuss it...it has been handed over to other people. They are responsible now. I no longer have any connection.".
Many on social media have expressed doubts about the journalist's conclusion, considering the evidence insufficient, while many have criticized Goodman for revealing too much information about Nakamoto and his life. However, her response was that the magazine used evidence that was publicly available.
It is noted that the publication has caused a great sensation in the international media, to the point of "stalking" Nakamoto and an Associated Press journalist by dozens of journalists in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, on the P2P Foundation's Ning website, a user claiming to be the real Satoshi Nakamoto wrote that "I am not Dorian Nakamoto." This particular publication is interesting because, according to TechCrunch, it is linked to the same email account that was used in a 2009 publication, where the idea of Bitcoin was described.
Previous journalistic investigations had suggested that “Satoshi Nakamoto” might have been a young British banker, a Finnish programmer, or an American law professor. However, in all cases, the individuals in question had denied this.
Many Bitcoin users view "Satoshi Nakamoto" as a "heroic" figure: a selfless genius who created a system that allows for greater economic freedom.
