According to statistics from the “Secunia Vulnerability Review 2014” report, a total of 1208 vulnerabilities were identified in the 50 most popular programs and applications last year. In terms of all programs and applications, the vulnerabilities reported in 2013 amounted to 13,073.
Starting with operating systems, the percentage of vulnerabilities reported in Windows 7 and Windows XP in 2013 has almost doubled compared to 2012. The number of vulnerabilities identified in Windows 7 amounted to 102, while the vulnerabilities identified in Windows XP amounted to 99.
Regarding the five most popular browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Opera and Safari), the data shows that a total of 727 vulnerabilities were identified in them, showing a decrease of 18.6% compared to 2012.The majority of vulnerabilities in browsers were classified as "extremely critical".
Finally, the report highlights that 86% of the vulnerabilities discovered in 2013 in the 50 most popular programs and applications were patched on the same day they were disclosed.
