Do you own digital currencies? Then PONY is after you.
A group of cybercriminals has used hundreds of thousands of infected computers holding digital currency to steal approximately $220,000 worth of Bitcoins and other virtual currencies.
Researchers at security firm, Trustwave, have uncovered the Bitcoin Heist on computers infected with a new class of malware dubbed “Pony,” a very powerful type of Spying Keylogger Malware with very dangerous features that was last seen two months ago.
Pony, for those who haven't heard of it yet, is a bot like any other, capable of capturing all kinds of confidential information and passwords. It contains a control panel, user management, logging capabilities, a database to manage all the data, and of course, statistics. It can see the passwords and login details of infected users when accessing applications and websites on the Internet.
The security firm has found that the botnet infected over 700,000 accounts within four months, between September 2013 and mid-January 2014, and gave criminals control of those accounts.
In December, the same piece of malware infected a number of popular websites and services such as Facebook, Google, Yahoo, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc., stealing several million passwords, which gave them access to all of these accounts.
