Sony is exiting the PC market after it will immediately sell, as officially announced, its personal computer division to the Japanese fund Japan Industrial Partners (JIP). As stated in the press release, the Japanese giant will no longer have any involvement in the design and manufacture of new models. Also, the new company that will result will initially focus on Japan, considering expansion to other countries at a later stage.
The company justified its decision by citing drastic changes in the global personal computer market, saying it wants to focus on the smartphone and tablet market. A move that coincides with a decline in global desktop and tablet sales, as more and more consumers around the world turn to "smart" devices.
Along with the restructuring of the television division, which is also in the works, approximately 5,000 jobs are expected to be lost.
