Hacker networks in Germany have stolen the passwords of approximately 16 million e-mail users and other services (such as social media or online shopping sites), the country's Federal Office for Information Security announced on Tuesday.
The perpetrators obtained users' personal information after they managed to "infect" their victims' computers with malware, software that allowed them to collect e-mail addresses and various passwords.
Most of the stolen passwords belong to German residents, meaning that almost 1/5 of the country's population may have been "hit" by hackers.
Federal authorities have not provided any information on any progress that may have been made in identifying the perpetrators. However, they have created a special website where any user can check if they have been affected by the hackers.
