Apple is planning to upgrade several iPads and Macs with OLED displays over the next three years, according to a new report from DigiTimes. The Taiwanese publication, citing industry sources, says that five Apple devices will receive OLED displays between 2026 and 2029.

Specifically, the iPad mini will be the first to receive the upgrade in 2026, while the MacBook Pro is expected to follow in late 2026 or early 2027.
The iPad Air will receive the upgrade in 2027, while the iMac and MacBook Air are expected to get OLED displays in 2028 or 2029.
OLED displays are known for their superior image quality compared to traditional LCD displays. This is due to the richer colors and higher contrast ratio they achieve. This technology has already been adopted by Apple in all current iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad Pro models, offering users a more vibrant and realistic viewing experience.

Specifically for the iPad Pro, Apple has implemented “ Tandem OLED ” technology , which uses two OLED panels for increased brightness and ProMotion support for a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. This technology allows graphics to be smoother and the screen response to be more immediate, which is especially important for users who use the iPad Pro for creative work or gaming.
However, the report notes that the iPad Air will feature a single OLED display with an LTPS substrate, which means the brightness will be lower and the refresh rate will be limited to 60Hz. These limitations make sense, as the iPad Air costs much less than the iPad Pro, making it a more affordable option for consumers who don't require the high performance of the Pro.
Apple: Investing in OLED displays
Switching to OLED displays isn't just an aesthetic upgrade. OLED displays are more energy efficient, as each pixel emits its own light, eliminating the need for a backlight. This can lead to longer battery life, which is critical for portable devices like iPads and MacBooks.

The upgrade to OLED displays is expected to positively impact users and organizations that rely on Apple devices for professional and creative work. Improved image quality and increased energy efficiency can boost productivity and reduce operating costs in the long term. In addition, consumers will be able to enjoy a more immersive viewing experience, whether for entertainment or work.

However, it's unclear if Apple ever plans to release a Studio Display XDR with an OLED screen. The current display features mini-LED backlighting, which also offers excellent picture quality, but with a different technology.
Apple's choice to retain LCD screens in some models, such as the base iPad and MacBook Neo, may be related to production costs and a desire to offer options at different price levels.
Overall, Apple's strategy to invest in OLED displays underscores its commitment to delivering superior quality and innovation to its users. With technology constantly evolving, consumers can expect even more improvements to Apple devices in the future.
