Sunbird Messaging has reintroduced its app that brings iMessage to Android users, a move that is expected to change the way users of the two most popular mobile operating systems communicate. The Sunbird app is now available on the Google Play Store, after an extensive early access testing period, offering a new experience for Android users looking to communicate with their iPhone-using friends.

The app allows Android users to send messages with the distinctive “blue bubbles” to iPhone users, replacing the typical green bubbles associated with SMS. This feature is especially important, as blue bubbles are synonymous with iMessage, which is considered by many to be more reliable and secure than traditional SMS. Sunbird integrates iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS messaging into one app, thus offering a complete communication solution.
Sunbird was originally released from late 2022 to late 2023, but the company was forced to pull it due to serious security concerns. When it was initially released, the app sent a user's Apple ID credentials to a Sunbird server to operate, with the information sent unencrypted over HTTP. This left the data vulnerable to attack, as an attacker could intercept all messages and media attachments.
In addition, Sunbird employees had access to a platform that stored all message content, which reinforced concerns about user privacy.
Following these concerns, the app returned to an invite-only beta in April 2024, but it hasn't been publicly available until now. The new version of Sunbird promises improved security, with the company saying that messages are now encrypted on the device and in transit, and are not stored on Sunbird's servers. An Apple ID is required to use Sunbird, and the company claims that passwords are used only once to set up a session and then destroyed, offering an extra layer of security.

When Sunbird first launched, it promised features that Android users didn’t have, like typing hints, read receipts, and higher-quality media. Android users can try the app for free for 14 days, giving them the opportunity to evaluate the app's features and security before deciding to subscribe. The subscription costs $2.99 per month or $24.99 per year, a price that can be considered reasonable for those who want to access iMessage without having to change devices.
