A group of hackers says they have managed to modify the code of the 3DS handheld to allow anyone interested to play games imported from regions other than their own.
Those interested in the process will need to have firmware 4.5 or earlier and access to a DS flashcard, according to The Escapist.
The modification has been carefully crafted so that you cannot play illegal game discs (ROMs) but only genuine games intended for a different geographical zone than your own (which means that a hacked 3DS cannot become a device that plays pirated titles).
Nintendo has made it clear that it does not want to eliminate region locking from the 3DS and will likely release new firmware for the machine that will make the current hack obsolete.
