Apple Watch Series 12: New health sensor on the strap?

The Apple Watch has evolved into one of the most advanced wearable health trackers, offering features like heart rate monitoring, electrocardiogram (ECG), blood oxygen measurement in select markets, fall detection, and sleep tracking. However, recent reports suggest that Apple may be preparing a major design change for the Apple Watch Series 12.

Apple Watch Series 12: New health sensor

According to a new leak, the next generation of the popular smartwatch may get a brand new health sensor, but it won't be on the watch's "body" but will be integrated into the strap. If confirmed, this would be one of the biggest changes ever made to the Apple Watch strap ecosystem.

The sensor may only be on the main strap

The information was released by the well-known leaker Kosutami, who in the past has correctly revealed several details about Apple products, but without a completely reliable track record, especially when it comes to the Apple Watch. According to what he claims, the new sensor will be integrated exclusively into the fluoroelastomer strap, i.e. the material Apple uses for the basic Sport Band that usually accompanies the watch.

The leak doesn't specify whether the band will be available exclusively with the Apple Watch Series 12 or as a separate accessory. The latter scenario is more likely, as it would allow users to get the new features without being limited to the watch's factory configuration.

What could the new sensor measure?

The biggest mystery is the new sensor's functionality. There's no word yet on what kind of measurements it will perform, but Apple patents have appeared for several years now describing sensors built into smartwatch straps.

Among the possible scenarios is the measurement of the body's hydration, a feature that is of particular interest to athletes and health professionals, as dehydration can significantly affect physical condition and performance.

Another possibility involves sensors that monitor muscle activity or muscle microcontractions via special electrodes. Such technology could significantly improve the accuracy of monitoring exercise, injury recovery, and daily physical activity.

Rumors about blood sugar testing continue

At the same time, Apple continues to work on one of the most talked-about features in the wearables space: non-invasive blood glucose measurement.

This particular technology has been in development for several years, but information converges that it will be based on the optical sensor system located at the bottom of the Apple Watch and not on a sensor integrated into the strap.

The challenge remains particularly great, as high accuracy is required so that the measurements can be reliably used by people who monitor their blood sugar levels on a daily basis.

Is the strap mechanism also changing?

This particular leak also brings back an older scenario that was released some time ago regarding a possible change in the way Apple Watch straps are attached.

If a new sensor needs to transmit data or even be powered by the watch itself, it might require a different connection mechanism with additional electrical contacts. Such a change would be the biggest upgrade to the strap system since the first-generation Apple Watch. However, it would also create practical issues, as millions of existing straps might not be fully compatible with the new model, something Apple typically avoids in order to maintain compatibility between generations.

How reliable is the information?

As with any leak before a product launch, the information should be treated with caution. Kosutami has been right on some of his predictions for Apple products, while others have been off. A typical example was his prediction that Apple would completely change the strap connection mechanism as early as 2023, which ultimately did not happen.

Still, the idea of moving some sensors from the watch body to the strap is increasingly appearing in patents and industry reports. If Apple follows through on this direction, the Apple Watch Series 12 could pave the way for a new generation of “smart” straps that add new health features without requiring a redesign of the smartwatch itself. Such an approach would give the company more flexibility for future upgrades, allowing it to add new sensors through accessories rather than necessarily through a brand-new watch model.
