Meta launches new 'Instants' feature

Meta has announced the launch of Instants, a new image sharing option on Instagram.

Instants

What are Instants and how do they work?

Instants are ephemeral photos that disappear from Instagram after they are viewed by a user's friends or after a period of 24 hours.

Reactions and replies to Instants images appear in direct messages (DMs) instead of on the post. The photos only appear for a short time, but are stored in the user’s archive for a year and can be reshared in Stories. Instants cannot be edited , and there are no options for filters, stickers, or customizations beyond captions. These elements differentiate them from Stories, which is already a popular Instagram feature.

While Instants is a feature of Instagram, Meta has also developed a standalone Instants app “for faster camera access.” The standalone app is a direct competitor to Snapchat, the original social network for ephemeral images. The new app can be used to share Instants, but on Instagram, users can also share Instants from a new camera option in the app’s Instant Messages section.

Instants can be viewed on Instagram by opening DMs and tapping the new Instants box in the bottom right corner of your inbox. Photos can be shared with friends who are designated as close friends or as mutuals, i.e. followers that an Instagram user follows back. Instants cannot be screenshotted or recorded, providing features privacy not available with other types of Instagram images.

Meta states that Instants are designed for everyday, casual photos.

The standalone app is limited to select countries, as Meta states that it is an experiment. Images shared to the Instants app will appear for friends on Instagram, and images shared to Instagram will appear in the Instants app.

Instants on Instagram are available globally starting yesterday, and the app is also available for download in countries where it is supported.

Meta: Changes that provide an improved user experience

Meta’s introduction of Instants marks yet another attempt to redefine how users share everyday moments on Instagram, emphasizing the immediacy and ephemeral nature of content. At a time when privacy and a “less permanent” digital presence are becoming more important, the new feature attempts to strike a balance between social networking and more personal, short-lived image exchanges.

Meanwhile, Meta's move to tie Instants into a standalone app shows that competition in the social media space remains fierce, especially against platforms like Snapchat. Whether the new feature manages to establish itself as a key communication tool will depend on how easily it is adopted by users and on whether it meets the need for more spontaneous and "unedited" digital expression.
