Meta is moving parental controls across all of its apps to a central hub in the Family Center. Starting Tuesday, parents can get more insight into what their teens are doing on Instagram. Meta is adding a feature to teen accounts that shows parents “general topics teens are into,” like “basketball” or “fashion.”

Meta also says it will soon start notifying parents when their teen adds a new interest to its algorithm.
In December, Meta announced its “Your Algorithm” feature, which allows users to choose topics they want to see more or less of on Instagram. Users with teen accounts already have restrictions on the topics they can add to their algorithm, as the content shown to users with teen accounts is supposed to be similar to the content of a PG-13 movie.
Meta also announced Tuesday that it is unifying parental controls for Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook and Messenger into a single hub in the Family Center. Parents can now send a single invitation to supervise their teen across all of those apps. Meta says the Family Center will gain more supervision tools in the coming months, such as total time spent by teens on Meta apps.

This new approach from Meta comes at a time when online safety for teens is more important than ever. Parents are concerned about the content their children are exposed to, and Meta is trying to provide more transparency and control to parents.
