Tesla files new trademarks for Roadster ahead of launch

Tesla has filed two new trademark applications for the Roadster with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, revealing a stylized logo and a distinctive triangular mark that deviates from the automaker’s typical approach. The filings suggest Tesla is preparing to bring the long-awaited electric supercar to market — nearly nine years after the prototype was first unveiled.

Both applications were filed on February 3, 2026, based on “intent to use,” meaning the company intends to use these marks commercially but has not yet applied for them. The first filing covers a stylized “ROADSTER” logo — in all caps, extended and angular with segmented fonts that lean toward a futuristic, high-performance aesthetic.

It is classified under the IC012 category for electric land vehicles. The second filing describes a diamond-shaped design consisting of lines that evoke “speed, propulsion, heat, or wind.” This suggests that the Roadster will carry its own distinct visual identity, separate from the badge system used on the Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck. This badge is notable because, aside from the Cybertruck’s angular, two-part logo, Tesla has never given one of its vehicles a unique, independent badge.

The Roadster appears to be getting a customized branding treatment usually reserved for supercar brands. “Intent to Use” trademark applications carry legal weight. Companies that file them are required to demonstrate actual commercial use within a set timeframe — usually three years, with extensions — or risk losing the registration altogether.

The fact that Tesla filed these applications in February 2026, while also approaching a reveal window, suggests that the company is indeed preparing to bring these brands to market. The filings also included what appeared to be an updated vehicle silhouette, sleeker and squarer at the roofline compared to the 2017 prototype. However, Tesla has also abandoned trademarks that never led to commercially released products.

With the Tesla Roadster, any sign of progress must be weighed against a nearly decade-long history of unfulfilled promises. The prototype debuted in November 2017 with promises of production in 2020. Reservation holders paid down payments ranging from $50,000 to $250,000. Musk pushed the timeline back to 2021, then 2022, then 2023, then 2024.

In November 2025, Tesla officially delayed the demonstration to April 1, 2026, with production pushed back to 2027 or 2028. In March 2026, Musk claimed the unveiling would take place by the end of April, but that did not happen. During the first quarter 2026 earnings call, Musk revised the timeline again to “maybe in a month or so,” citing the need for testing and validation—postponing the unveiling to late May or early June 2026.

This represents at least the eighth time Musk has moved up the dates for the Roadster since 2017. Early customers who paid down payments will be waiting a full decade before receiving their cars — if they ever do. Production, according to Musk’s own framework, would follow 12 to 18 months after the show — pointing to an actual delivery start sometime in mid-to-late 2027 or 2028.

Trademark filings are real, carry some legal obligations, and there are indications that Tesla is making real production preparations for the Roadster.

But Tesla has been filing trademarks, posting job ads, and dropping hints about the Roadster for years, while only delivering delays. The real question is whether the Roadster can still matter. When the concept debuted in 2017, a 0-60 time of 1.9 seconds and a range of more than 600 miles were impressive. In 2026, the performance landscape of electric vehicles has evolved significantly.
