The BBC's longest-running series, which has also won a Guinness World Record for the number of episodes, turns 50 today and Google is celebrating with a fun, playful doodle.
Dr Who is a British science fiction series that tells the adventures of an anthropomorphic alien time traveler known as the Doctor, who explores the universe, confronts robots and monsters, and saves civilizations, using a time machine called the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space) that looks like a blue police box from 1963 Britain.
The programme originally ran from 1963 to 1989, and after a failed attempt to revive it as a TV film in 1996 the series was finally restarted in 2005, with an in-house production by BBC Wales in Cardiff
Doctor Who has been played by eleven actors so far, and the transition from one actor to another is referred to in the narrative as Regeneration, in which the protagonist essentially acquires a new body and to some extent, a new personality, while in certain episodes and during time travel, the various incarnations happen to meet.
The Doctor is currently played by Matt Smith, who took over the role after David Tennant's final appearance, in an episode that aired on January 1, 2010.
In the clever doodle presented by Google to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the series, the user can choose one of the protagonists and, using the keyboard's arrow keys, go through various tracks in order to collect all the letters of the word Google in order to finish.
