Setting a new milestone in the evolution of smartphones, LG announced the G Flex, the curved smartphone that harmonizes with the contours of the face.
The G Flex, the latest smartphone in LG's premium line of devices, incorporates technologies from different business units of the Korean company, in the form of a display and battery that have not been revealed until now.
Its vertically curved design reduces the distance between the mouth and the microphone when the device is placed in the ear, the way traditional phones did. The G Flex uses an arc of curvature that has been optimized specifically for the average face to deliver improved voice and sound quality. The curve increases the volume by 3dB compared to a conventional smartphone. In addition, the curve offers a more stable grip and fits more comfortably in a back pocket. In landscape mode, the screen offers an IMAX experience, resulting in the most comfortable viewing angle for watching videos or playing games.
The G Flex also features the back button, first introduced on the G2. With less chance of accidentally turning off the phone due to the absence of side buttons, it retains the convenience of using the pointer and volume controls during a call.
It was developed in collaboration with Korean conglomerate LG Display and LG Chem. The 6-inch display incorporated into the G Flex is the largest plastic OLED (POLED) display mass-produced specifically for smartphones. The ultra-thin, lightweight and flexible POLED display, as well as the curved OLED panel, are built on plastic substrates instead of glass, giving the G Flex its unique shape and durability. The POLED display is brighter and more accurate, thanks to the implementation of Real RGB, which contains all three sub-pixels – red, green and blue – in a single pixel.
LG Chem developed the world's first curved battery technology specifically for the G Flex. Despite its slim form, its battery has a capacity of 3,500 mAh, theoretically providing enough power for more than a full day of use.
Also among the various new technologies, the G Flex is the first smartphone to feature a Self Healing coating on the back. This resilient coating protects against everyday wear and tear, potential scratches and cuts that can occur on smartphones without a case.
