iPhone's Emergency SOS via satellite helped rescue skier

Six skiers who survived an avalanche near Lake Tahoe on Tuesday used their iPhone's Emergency SOS via satellite feature to get help , according to The New York Times.

Satellite Emergency Call allows iPhone users to contact emergency services via text messages when a cellular or Wi-Fi connection is not available.

The skiers managed to remain connected to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office for several hours while rescue efforts were coordinated.

“One of my staff members was in contact with one of the drivers for about four hours, providing information back to the Nevada Sheriff’s Office and coordinating what rescues could be authorized,” said Don O’Keefe, chief of law enforcement for the California Office of Emergency Services.
