The issue, with the ID DZ1191468 in the Microsoft 365 admin center, had been causing concern since early Tuesday, as administrators reported delays, failed connections and lags when trying to load the security dashboard.
The outage began earlier in the day, with users in various regions experiencing issues accessing the Defender portal (security.microsoft.com). According to Microsoft’s updates, the cause was traced to an unexpected “spike in traffic” that overloaded the service’s access capabilities. Since the portal is essential for SOC teams to monitor alerts, investigate incidents, and manage endpoint security, the outage temporarily left some organizations without access to real-time threat data.
Microsoft quickly identified the issue and assigned it the ID DZ1191468. In a notification to administrators, the company confirmed the nature of the anomaly. After implementing traffic management measures, service availability has largely been restored. However, Microsoft notes that while the core issue has been resolved, it is still “looking into individual bug reports” to ensure full stability for all tenants.

For enterprise security teams, access to the Microsoft Defender portal is essential. It is the central tool for Extended Detection and Response (XDR), allowing analysts to categorize malware alerts and isolate compromised devices.
Even brief access interruptions can impact a SOC’s ability to respond to active threats or verify automated remediation actions. During the outage, automated background protection processes (such as Defender Antivirus on endpoints) likely continued to operate, but the administrative visibility required for human oversight was temporarily lost.

Administrators who are still experiencing connection issues are advised to monitor the Service Health Dashboard in the Microsoft 365 admin center, under ID DZ1191468, for the latest updates on full recovery.
