More commercialization is coming to OpenAI’s Sora platform, including cuts to its free AI video creation capabilities. OpenAI is now allowing users to purchase additional credits for video creation, addressing concerns from power users who feel the current free creation limits are insufficient—100 for Pro users and 30 for everyone else. Bill Peebles, head of the Sora team, said the platform’s finances are “completely unsustainable at this time.”

Ten additional video creations will cost $4, with the number of credits used per video depending on factors such as length and resolution. If users reach their free limit, they will have the option to purchase more credits through the App Store. These credits last for 12 months and can also be used on OpenAI’s coding platform, Codex.

Peebles mentioned that users may soon be hitting their limits more often, stating, “Eventually we will need to reduce free creations to accommodate growth.” He assured that OpenAI will be transparent about any changes.
This decision to charge for video creations is part of a broader strategy to commercialize and scale Sora, aiming to power an AI-powered creator economy. OpenAI has added features like clip linking and leaderboards for popular videos, as well as a feature called cameos, which allows users to create deepfake avatars of themselves and others for use in videos.

Sora plans to test monetization for creators soon, with Peebles envisioning a scenario where rights holders could charge for cameos of popular characters. The move comes as OpenAI moves away from its previous approach to copyright and likeness, which had led to the platform being filled with questionable depictions of fictional characters and deepfake videos of public figures.
