Amazon has announced its largest investment in the Netherlands since it began operations in the country: 1.4 billion euros (about $1.63 billion ) over the next three years. The initiative marks a new phase of growth for the company as it strengthens its presence in the eurozone's fifth-largest economy, aiming not only to strengthen its retail business but also to expand its digital infrastructure in Europe.

Strengthening presence and technological innovation
Amazon's announcement is not just about strengthening its presence in a strategic market, but also about investing in cutting-edge technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing , and tools for small and medium-sized businesses.

According to Eva Faict, head of Amazon for Belgium and the Netherlands, the investment will contribute to improving customer service, upgrading the seller experience on the platform and developing new AI applications for businesses using Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure.
"The Netherlands is a market with a high level of digital maturity and a strong interest in innovative solutions. With this investment, we aim to offer better service and strengthen our technological capabilities in the country," Faict said.
The Netherlands as a hub for digital Europe
Since Amazon launched its official activity in the Netherlands in 2020 , it has developed significant partnerships with local suppliers and businesses, but it still lags behind Bol.com , Ahold Delhaize 's popular domestic e-commerce platform .

The new investment is expected to change market relationships, strengthening Amazon's ability to compete with local players through a better supply chain, faster deliveries and new services.

Beyond retail, Amazon aims to turn the Netherlands into a technology hub for the development of cloud and AI solutions in Europe. The country already has developed data centers, a stable energy infrastructure and a high level of digital education — three factors that make it ideal for hosting large-scale projects.
The investment and the broader European plan
The initiative in the Netherlands is part of a broader investment plan by Amazon in Europe , which includes a recent $1.16 billion investment in Belgium , announced earlier this month. The company aims to create a single European ecosystem of services — from logistics and retail to cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence.
Amazon is also strengthening its presence in Germany, France and the Nordics, investing in green data centers powered by renewable energy. These investments reflect the company's commitment to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by 2040 , in line with the Climate Pledge program .
Artificial intelligence for small businesses
One of the most important elements of the new investment concerns the development of AI tools for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that sell through the Amazon platform. The company plans to offer tools automatic content creation, market analysis systems and sales forecasts based on machine learning algorithms, with the aim of enhancing the efficiency and competitiveness of sellers.
This move comes at a time when artificial intelligence is becoming the catalyst for the next generation of e-commerce, but also the field of intense competition between major technology companies — from Microsoft and Google to Alibaba.

Impact on employment and local economies
Amazon already employs around 1,000 people in the Netherlands, a number that is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. The company plans to create new jobs in technology ,logistics, marketing and AI development, thereby strengthening the local innovation ecosystem.
Furthermore, the investment is expected to act as a multiplier for the Dutch economy, attracting new startups, cloud service providers and technology partners.
The future of Amazon in Europe
With continuous investments and technological upgrades, Amazon is attempting to redefine its role in the European market — not just as a retail platform, but as a technology provider of infrastructure, data, and AI services.
The Netherlands, thanks to its strategic location and technologically mature environment, seems set to become a central pillar of this new era.
