Judson Althoff is now taking over Microsoft’s core commercial division, allowing CEO Satya Nadella to focus on more technical tasks. Microsoft is promoting Althoff, who is currently executive vice president and chief commercial officer, to CEO of its commercial division. The move comes as Microsoft navigates what Nadella describes as a “tectonic AI platform shift” and aims to reinvent itself in the AI era, integrating sales, marketing, operations and engineering to drive growth.

In an internal memo, Satya Nadella announced Althoff's promotion, emphasizing the need for a cohesive approach to meeting customer demands and strengthening Microsoft's position in the AI transformation. Althoff has led Microsoft's global sales organization for the past nine years and will now oversee the operations and marketing teams that sell Microsoft's software and services to enterprises, though he will not manage the engineering teams.
Nadella noted that by integrating operations into the commercial sector, Microsoft can strengthen the feedback loop between customer needs and service delivery. Althoff will also lead a new commercial leadership team that includes leaders from across departments.

Microsoft has increased the placement of CEOs to lead its major business units, such as Phil Spencer for Microsoft Gaming and Mustafa Suleyman for Microsoft AI. This organizational change positions Althoff as the central figure in generating revenue from enterprise customers, while allowing Satya Nadella to focus on technical initiatives.
Satya Nadella said this restructuring will allow engineering leaders to focus on critical technical work, including data center development, systems architecture, AI science, and product innovation. He emphasized that this is not just an evolution, but a reinvention for both the company and its employees.
