Google Drive is actively upgrading its document scanner for Android phones. Last year, the service began offering black and white filters and output format options. To increase the reliability of the utility, the company is now introducing a feature that automatically improves output scans.

Google announced that it is making mobile scans through the Drive app “sharper and clearer” through automatic adjustments. These improvements include white balance correction, shadow removal, contrast enhancement, auto-sharpening, and light enhancement.
The service will evaluate each scanned document individually and apply relevant edits as needed. This will result in a higher quality, more professional output that minimizes common defects such as shadows, grain, and poor lighting.

Google Drive has already started rolling out the improved document scanner to Fast Track domains, with its completion scheduled for January 2. The feature will also roll out to Scheduled Release domains starting January 6. Fortunately, the new scanner will be available to all Google Drive users, including Google Workspace customers and those with personal accounts.

To get started using the upgraded document scanner, make sure you're running the latest version of Google Drive on your Android phone. Given the gradual nature of this rollout, however, the company may not activate the feature on your end until early next year.

In addition to the newly added auto-enhancement tool, Google Drive continues to allow users to crop or rotate their scans, apply filters, and clean them up before saving them to devices . The service also lets them choose between PDF and JPEG.
