When Apple released the iPhone 17 in September, the countdown began for the new flagship model to break a record that was set 15 years ago. The record will take over a year to break, but based on current rumors, the iPhone 17 will be the first to steal the crown.

That record belongs to the iPhone 4, which was released in June 2010 and remained Apple's top iPhone until October 2011. Because Apple moved its flagship release cycle from summer to fall that year, the iPhone 4 held its spot for nearly 16 months.
It was a particularly disappointing time for customers who had planned to “wait for the iPhone 5.” Instead, Apple introduced the iPhone 4S, which looked almost identical to the iPhone 4. The changes came on the inside: Siri made its debut, the camera was improved, and performance was upgraded.
The iPhone 4 technically had several launch moments as well. AT&T was the exclusive iPhone carrier in the U.S. and released it first. Verizon followed as the second carrier in the U.S. six months later. Then the long-awaited white model arrived after 10 months of delays.
Since then, no iPhone has matched the iPhone 4's 15-month record as a flagship. The closest was the iPhone 11 Pro, which held its spot for 13 months after the iPhone 12's launch was delayed during the pandemic. There are other exceptions, like the gaps from the iPhone SE to the SE 2 and the iPhone 16e, which each reached over four years, but those are by design, not flagship cycles.

The iPhone 18 isn't expected to arrive until spring 2027. That would mean the iPhone 17 would sit at the top of Apple's main lineup for about 18 months, surpassing the iPhone 4's record and setting a new benchmark for the longest run among standard flagship replacements.
One key difference between the iPhone 4 era and today is the existence of the Pro series. The period from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 4S created a drought of upgrades for customers who were waiting for something new.
This time, the cycle from iPhone 17 to iPhone 18 will still see Pro models arrive annually, along with what is expected to be Apple's first foldable iPhone.
A foldable model would be the most drastic hardware change to the iPhone ever, but the iPhone 17 is still on track to take the crown for longest-lasting among standard flagship replacements.
By the way, the smallest difference between iPhone upgrades can be surprising. The cycle from iPhone 12 to iPhone 13 comes to mind as it lasted only 11 months after Apple course-corrected following pandemic delays.

But despite being announced in September 2017, the iPhone X was replaced by the iPhone XS after just 10 months of actual availability due to the first model's release date in November 2017.
