Google has announced two new security features , based on artificial intelligence (AI) that allow the detection of scam calls on Pixel devices and the detection of unsafe apps on Google Play.

Google Pixel: Call monitoring for fraud detection through AI
Google is adding a new AI security to Pixel devices that monitors phone conversations to detect scams.
The system works in real-time and detects conversation patterns that are commonly associated with scams. When a call is detected as a scam, a notification will appear on the Pixel device, informing the user of the potential scam and asking if they want to end the phone call.

Although all processing takes place on the device, Google has chosen to keep the feature disabled by default, allowing users to choose whether they want to enable it through the Phone app settings or even during a call.
The initial rollout of the anti-fraud system will only work for conversations conducted in English and is currently available to users with Google Pixel 6 and newer devices in the US.
“Gemini Nano, our advanced AI, powers fraud detection on Pixel 9 series devices,” Google explains.
“As part of our effort to bring powerful AI features to even more devices, this AI-powered protection is available to Pixel 6+ users thanks to Google's other powerful machine learning models“.

AI detection of unsafe apps on Google Play
Google also added a new protection feature to Google Play Protect that detects, in real-time, and notifies you about unsafe apps on Google Play.
“ Play Protect analyzes behaviors related to the use of sensitive permissions and interactions with other apps and services ,” Google announced
“With real-time threat detection, you will receive a notification, allowing you to take immediate action to protect your device“.
The scanning and detection process is done locally on the device through Private Computer Core , to protect privacy.

Google clarified that, at its initial launch, the new system will focus on stalkerware that collects data about the victim. In the future, more types of dangerous applications will be added.
Both features have been made available on Google Pixel 6 and newer models in the series, but will soon be offered on Android devices from other manufacturers.
