Tech companies are determined to release a phone with a bigger screen, and increasing the size every year isn't enough. And apparently, not even a simple foldable is enough! After Huawei its tri-fold phone, Honor seems to be trying to outdo the competition and is working on a multi-fold phone.

A recently filed patent describes a device that looks like it has a plus sign in the middle. These are the two folds that run along the screen of this alleged phone. This design makes it possible to rotate the phone in and out, both vertically and horizontally. It also means that this device will potentially have a very large screen.
This multi-folding phone patent is not related to Honor's rumored tri-fold that aims to directly compete with the Huawei Mate XT while being even thinner. It talks about a possible future device that will likely be classified as a completely different type of smartphone.

Of course, if such a foldable phone does hit the shelves, it will definitely cost a lot. The Huawei Mate XT sold for over $21,000 in one case. Only the most serious enthusiasts and collectors—with enough money to spare—would pick up a phone at that price.
This patent for Honor's multi-folding phone, however, also highlights another aspect of the phone industry. It clearly shows how much innovation Chinese manufacturers are rushing to achieve.
Kind of like the car market, which is now seeing an influx of affordable Chinese cars with excellent performance numbers and build quality. Current phone offerings also outperform the big names in a number of ways. For example, budget Chinese smartphones often come with three times the charging rates of your typical Galaxy or iPhone .

There's a reason these manufacturers enjoy such a large market share in a huge number of countries. And while they may not be as popular in the US, being the first to design something new will give them an advantage.
