Electric vehicles: Many models exceed 5,000 sales

Despite reports of slowing electric vehicle (EV) sales, the number of electric cars on U.S. roads is on the rise. In the second quarter of 2024, 18 models surpassed 5,000 sales, with Tesla, Ford and Hyundai leading the market. Meanwhile, new models like the Toyota bZ4X, Kia EV9 and Chevy Blazer EV have joined the list of popular choices.

According to Kelley Blue Book, electric vehicle sales hit a new record in the second quarter, with 320,463 cars sold in the U.S. That number is up 11% from last year and 23% from the first quarter of 2024. New models and discounts from many companies appear to be contributing to the market's growth.

It is worth noting that with the influx of new electric vehicle models, Tesla's market share fell below 50% (49.7%) for the first time.

New electric Chevy models , including the Blazer , Equinox and Silverado , added more than 21,000 sales to GM, but that wasn't enough to overtake Ford, which sold nearly 24,000 electric vehicles in the second quarter.

When Hyundai Motor Group (Hyundai, Kia, Genesis) sales are included, Hyundai was actually the second-best EV brand in the U.S. According to Motor Intelligence, Hyundai, along with Kia and Genesis, captured 10% of the U.S. EV market in the second quarter, surpassing Ford (7.4%) and GM (6.3%).

The electric vehicle market continues to grow, with several models surpassing 5,000 sales in the second quarter. Despite Tesla's declining share, overall competition in the electric vehicle sector is intensifying.

“Increased competition leads to continued pricing pressure, which ultimately drives EV adoption,” explained Valdez Streaty, adding that “automakers that offer the right product at the right price and provide a great consumer experience will lead the adoption of EVs.”.

New competition is driving down prices as automakers offer significant incentives. According to Motor Intelligence, Kia's new EV9 was among them, with an average discount of more than $18,000 in June.

Like many car manufacturers, Subaru offers lease deals for the Solterra, with pricing starting at $329 per month (for 36 months) with no down payment.

As more models are released and electric vehicle technology continues to evolve, sales are expected to continue to increase.

Turning to electric cars

More and more automakers are releasing electric cars, as there is a shift toward electrification.

Electric vehicles are more environmentally friendly as they significantly contribute to reducing harmful gas emissions. This can lead to a cleaner atmosphere and an improved quality of life, especially in areas with high levels of air pollution.

Additionally, electric vehicles are more efficient than conventional cars that use gasoline or diesel. This means they use less energy to move, thus reducing the consumption of natural resources and dependence on fossil fuels.

Finally, the use of electric vehicles can contribute to the promotion of renewable energy. With the increase in demand for electricity, there is the potential for more investment in renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, which can generate electricity without emitting pollutants.
