The largest battery energy storage facility in New York City will replace a natural gas-fired in 2025.
Utility-scale battery energy storage developer Elevate Renewables, in partnership with ArcLight Capital Partners, will install a 15 MW/60 MWh battery storage facility at the Arthur Kill Power Station on Staten Island (pictured above). Elevate is a wholly owned subsidiary of a fund managed by ArcLight.

The battery storage, which will replace the 20 MW NRG Arthur Kill GT1 peaking unit that will be retired in 2025, will store energy during off-peak hours and release it during periods of increased demand. This will help maintain grid.
“The Arthur Kill redevelopment project will install state-of-the-art energy storage technology on the site of a former power plant. This project showcases Elevate’s battery expertise , significant development pipeline, and ability to help deliver on New York State’s energy storage infrastructure strategy . The goal is to achieve New York State’s ambitious goal of storing 6 GW of energy by 2030,” said Eric Cherniss, Chief Development Officer at Elevate Renewables.

When completed, the largest facility in New York City will have the capacity to power over 10,000 households during peak periods. Additionally, it will be the first existing power facility in the region to be repurposed for battery storage.
